Sailaday Ok

An adventure therapy charity, supports rehabilitation centres programmes that are helping people recover from addictions, trauma and abuse, by providing a challenging outdoor sport activity of sailing therapy. Participants have proved that they are more likely to complete treatment as a consequence of the SOK experience.

How do these positive changes come about?

The Sailaday Ok experience is about you and is aimed to help you improve how you think and feel about yourself. This is a therapeutic activity and there are no sailing exams although participants engage in all the activities of managing a boat and there are many opportunities to learn sailing, crewing and navigation. But the primary concern is to help you be as present as possible, to be in the ‘here and now’, to leave the past behind and to let the future look after itself. Therapeutic time is given to a variety of exercises, meditation, mindfulness, Tai Chi / balancing; these are all designed to increase your self-awareness and your sense of being present.  The idea is that you develop greater trust in your body and all your senses, these will help you helm (steering) the boat. Each day attention is given in group time at the end of each day to process and reflect on the day’s experiences.

Some behaviour doesn’t help you be present and there are some restrictions on use of cell phones. texting, and personal music equipment, headphones etc.

Being in an unfamiliar setting causes participants to experience a higher level of emotional arousal than usual; they step outside of their comfort zone as they face dramatically different circumstances than usual (everything is moving, different clothes, food, accommodation, environment, routines, roles and expectations); their homeostasis is disturbed repeatedly as they engage in emotional and physical activity which carries a high perceived risk, but where the actual risk is low. This process often requires the development of new personal qualities and competencies whilst affirming and strengthening existing ones.
