Sailing therapy

5.26PM   Wed Jun 9 2010

A Westcountry charity is using sailing to help vulnerable people rebuild their lives. Sailaday OK has a thirty three foot yacht, to help them recover from addictions, abuse and trauma.

The essence of recovery is change

The essence of recovery is change, ability to change and manage change. A core, destructive characteristic of addiction is the inability to manage change and an often fierce determination to prevent change. This inability to change is ultimately destructive; at best it leads to a confusing, chaotic life, lurching from one crisis to the next, at worst the outcome is death. Sailing is a great opportunity to learn how to manage changes beyond our control, i.e. the weather. When the conditions change or our condition changes we need to make the appropriate changes. Of course this is fairly obvious in respect to sailing but is just the same for life ashore

Introduction activities and conditions wilderness therapy aboard Physis

An introduction to some of the activities and varied conditions likely to be experienced on sailaday ok sessions.  This is only a short blog with a variety of sights and conditions, various weather and sailing conditions.  The outcomes are extremely positive. The primary aim is for the participants to have a positive experience of themselves. The experience gives them tools to help their completion of treatment and eventually re-integration into the community. The Sailaday Ok experience has proved extremely successful, it changes lives. Sailings are three to five days from Falmouth, Cornwall.

Connecting with the environment to strengthen recovery

Video is about learning to adapt to the changes environmental and personal on a boat and the therapeutic benefits that will strengthen your recovery from addictions, abuse and trauma. "Facing the menacing and magical presence of the omnipresent sea, sorrow, desire, sentimental attachments, hatreds and hopes dissolve in the wake, dwindling until they seem far away, meaningless, because the ocean brings people back to themselves.."

Blind helming a tool to recovery

Blind helming is a great exercise to build confidence, trust and body awareness. This really helps to get the participant to connect with the elements and let the body do the sailing. Learn that your body has natural problem solving abilities if you listen to the information it is gathering.
